Storage tips and tricks

Think ahead and make the most of the space you have

You’ve cleaned all your goods. You’ve got all the protective material and boxes you need. Now all you need to do is get them to
the storage unit in one piece, hope everything fits and lock the door.

Not so fast! The key to successful storage lies in more than just making the most of the space you have. It’s also about thinking
ahead in order to successfully retrieve your goods when the day comes. This guide will cover the hacks you need to ensure
both aspects become a reality.

Plan ahead and stick to the plan. Organization is key.As you are packing the boxes, make detailed notes of what has gone where, both on the boxes themselves and in separate documentation.
Place all bulkier household appliances like the washing machine or freezer in your transportation last, so you can access them first when you get to the storage unit. You’ll want these at the back of your self-storage. This way you can access the smaller items, like books or ski boots, that you might want sooner.
On that note, prioritize your storage layout in order of assumed timing of need. When is it likely you’ll next want your winter tires, golf clubs or sewing machine?
Gain extra space by storing light but hardy items in the cavities of your household appliances or furniture with drawers. However, only do this once the items are firmly in their desired location of the unit. Do not transport your goods like this.
If possible, lay out the items and boxes so there is a safe ‘alley way’ between them. This will be integral to finding that one item that wasn’t meant to be there for as long as the others.
If you haven’t been able to take apart bulkier pieces of furniture, store them vertically. This will make the most of the vertical space you have and give you more space for the aisle or ‘alley way’.
If you have lots of smaller items and you want easy access to them, you could see if it’s possible to install shelves or simply invest in a shelving unit.
If you’re super organized you could always graphically represent your inventory list on a map.
